26.06.2013, 18:00 GMT

The Irish Presidency secured agreement today between the Council and the European Parliament on a seven year Customs Programme that will strengthen the functioning of the customs union and the EU’s Single Market.

The Customs 2020 Programme is an action programme for customs administration in the EU for the period 1 January 2014 to 31 December 2020. The specific objective is to support cooperation between customs authorities and other stakeholders through joint actions that include human networking, developing expertise and IT capacity building.

The Customs 2020 Programme promotes the efficient and uniform application of customs legislation and will contribute to the Europe 2020 Strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.

The agreement will now go to the European Parliament and Committee of Permanent Representatives for endorsement
